Winooski Memorial Library, The Intervale Center, and Feeding Chittenden joined forces this summer to bridge the gap and help end local food waste in Winooski.

The Free Summer Veggie Program began offering free food weekly for community members who are in need in July.  Most organizations who offer similar resources require some sort of documentation or proof of income.

However, the Free Summer Veggie Program does not require sign-up, identifying information, nor proof of income. According to Library Director Nate Eddy, this is one of the many ways the program seeks to tackle food insecurity in Winooski.

“[It] developed out of recognition that food insecurity remains a challenge to many in our community and this is but one way to address that need while also providing healthy (and free) locally grown produce,” said Eddy.

The relationship between this event and the community is symbiotic. All food donations from The Intervale Center Program are made up of excess vegetables that would otherwise go to waste. Keeping with their vision to, “...envision food systems that support joyful, vibrant communities,” all of the vegetables were grown in this area.

Though The Intervale Center offers mostly fresh fruits and vegetables, the Feeding Chittenden booth focuses more on non-perishables. They offer everything from rice and canned goods to juices and powdered milk.

“We are currently piloting an order ahead initiative.” said Community Engagement Manager Anna McMahon. However, for now, anyone who is in the area is allowed to attend the event and take what they need.

According to Kenzie Hines from The Intervale Center, “scarcity is a myth.”

This program will run through the end of October, and the harvest is plentiful. For those who do not have a shopping bag, one will be provided.

However, in the best interest of sustainability, sponsors recommend bringing a shopping bag or something similar. All three organizations welcome community members to visit the Winooski Memorial Library parking lot every Wednesday from 4:00pm-6:00pm for a dignified food pantry experience.
